So its time to learn to make cheese . I have been reading up on cheese making and looking at a few DVD's that i found on cheese making . Over the last few years i have been collecting the equiment i could find , stanless steel cheesepress , pots . cheese cloth , laddles and slotted spoons ,stainless steel cheese prep table, ext. ext. So i have most that ill need for that , now getting the milk in good order , up to now i have been milking outside in the dirt or rain and mud , trying to get the money to finish milking parlor , but the milks here , so im just going to have to go with what i have , and finish it later . This will be nice , milking indoors , no bugs , theres lights ,water , heat and soon A/C too . A dream coming true .Sabine River Homesteadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610876121883431092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2257675858010718259.post-72039755139376793412012-01-12T09:25:00.002-06:002012-01-12T09:36:38.587-06:00The Good And The Bad of the last few daysThe twines had there babys , one had one , and the other tryed to have two at the same time and thay died and i had to pull them out . Thay are ok , but pumkin has no milk . So i went to town and got some Colostrum milk at the feed store . Got home and feed her , Then i got a call that a nabor had about a truck loud of leaves , that we need for the garden and the chickens . It tuned out to be 4 truck loads , but we need it , and im very tired . I went out to the barn to give another milk bottle to the baby , and could heir more babys criying , but not at the barn , way out in the nabors pastune , where the heard of goats is . The herd gets back by the time im finished feeding the baby , and i can steel hear babys in the pasture , so i walked over there and find 2 baby bucks , dryed off and ready to go home . Poppys doughter had them , but isent giving them milk , so i milked her , and feed the babys , then feed all the other animals . I cant tell you how tired i was then , but i went to bed after all that , this morning im steel feeling it .Sabine River Homesteadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610876121883431092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2257675858010718259.post-82421414086687586192012-01-04T05:49:00.005-06:002012-01-04T05:56:18.674-06:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheetpUhxSnpiJI8b0LdCHPjk_IO4f1R5t8ziQbH7K4bYSgD4oNfamXvSup7o2pbmWRSKVe67ZS1TJvTe8WrqYonCq-o1QrDS6uQB7xC7kHAvYBF-BBI4_MWBv5AfAiWww0a7mGhU9rsfLa/s400/SANY0348_640x480.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693744400055410514" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSccFTyWJ0caDmU71hjxwN_2a0ZymdLS-bQKCnJaHFwGPAcIAWAXq6I2u6J2KkUQPZZTIkIdscXwyD3FDkUX24t_PWEJ_2NjuM7om7Oy3ydYa2m3j806cKUC422qEL0uE5rY-XIHsWT-4z/s400/SANY0364_640x480.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693744214693789650" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBOGuaXqcWb4zVZ2rWAC_LmE9R_JmvPN7nSiCNsbCjlL7wHgDQMnQ3UEo9Q2VbtlHWKC3VV-3AGQWLWCZiGNyva8puIqLKV70lUEjwQdx2OzUKUPNHKiHv1_Nouvi_2NZJ3kqOeAUNtYHv/s400/SANY0400_640x480.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693744029124852146" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUGg5sBW3lT-HT0sKlUSZ0ymj4iRmT5luEbVcRkV5EnxLYQw7CQPcbduNPU3qR1OYyJVyoM8FI0ge09uHNxtEN0MFY4Ub1hCRyB2cA9PaEJ-6_OirwjImihYy6ShcANbxXLbYiXRb8W6Fq/s400/SANY0403_640x480.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693743793876675794" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit5UtabLKI1xiVyYhppIicqfrcI2Vw-h1WP8JPc0RrZRiyWKPfJdBb3n40_CQwa3KfxihFFjVI7lgIL1DPzLf3yvO1vLHcWWQfdHOn7NQRs290EdIKlBVzp4vewR22wwn3mYRJtWt7i450/s400/SANY0344_640x480.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693743494115006050" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvSNmhvUidLrvmB0FGu3dItZXq14Wch8ytOJkDbOVKnLkfTVJA_OU3YmUtQKk9iCQRLxGRjTmxIchid38pV08Vmp_QOoExn3pUpb6co0dcKva26bKgc-ngQI4-9BfG1MFTUWjlqETbMDEf/s400/SANY0395_640x480.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693743067591792386" />Sabine River Homesteadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610876121883431092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2257675858010718259.post-43778104773551896932012-01-01T05:41:00.003-06:002012-01-01T07:28:47.167-06:00Another Buitiful Day in are wild paridiceAugest 1 2011 ,it started off as a nice day , went to work at brookshine brothers in the produce depratment . Currently the garden is in a transitional phase. The items currently growing are bell and jalapeno peppers, watermelon, sorghum, asparagus and tomatoes. Garlic and potatoes have been harvested and are making excellent meal contributions, onions are done growing and are good to eat. <img style="float:right; margin:15px 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicr2d7AYF00dyalnPPaQjErkamhdrktP6H8WUMgDFcUfiHQ9LQ9S-z1VjTVmSqRlSuOXS2ffHiWKaL3feUt-odi-rqoyMODV4TEcv3e_pjg0M3fei7R80dVNckh7GgYWCWeiLDqjVtLzo/s320/freezer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5632284449698660754" />The squash and zucchini had a tough time fighting the squash bugs and got pulled up but had provided some good food for the time they were going. We harvested the corn, carrots and beets and got them put up in the freezer. Some of the corn had been eaten by corn earworms but most of it was salvageable, next corn planting we will be more prepared to combat the worms. The heat and lack of rain has been taking it's toll, but at the same time showing which plants are more resilient to lack of water and forcing us to contemplate more efficient watering methods.

So now the garden work is focused on weeding and preparing plots for planting of pumpkins which Mike plans to have ready to sell for Halloween. We want to thank the visitors we had, Eli and her friend, for coming out and helping weed the garden, it was a big help! We also got a chance to pick peaches which Eli used to make a great pie. They were also nice enough to leave a generous donation, THANK YOU

I have the results of the seed germination test. So far about 5 of the romaine seeds sprouted, 13 of the mustard seeds and 2 of the kale. So this was out of 14 of each of the seeds showing 35.7% of the romaine sprouted, 92.8% of the mustard and 14.2% for the kale. I'll try the kale and romaine again to see if I can get a better germination rate.<img style="display:block; margin:10px auto 20px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkUDRYlovznnc2MC32wJWZM-VTDuYaSfXG7vAPiGXhPqy3T78R5fPLDUUcSIsbiH9t0mdehH_Xy3QGfmsXiKL4ZSJooErUjKgk2kCnrFq1RDmS8TvGNtyQCB06eR08_ZlTytOX2Un0YfY/s400/seedtest.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5632275391512830530" />Allrighty I also harvested about half of the okra seed pods so far and got some sorghum seeds. So far we have mustard (right), kale (far right) and romaine seeds (below) and later we'll get some tomato, watermelon and okra seeds. One thing to watch out for when saving seeds is cross pollination of plants from the same families. So since we have bell peppers and jalapeno peppers (of the Solanaceae family) planted in the same plot, the seeds produced may be hybrids which will produce fruit different from non-hybrid pepper or jalapeno. This could make an interesting plant with perfectly edible fruit, but is generally undesirable for serious seed saving.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 0px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-sRjII3Hg9psufqj0H8czhvpa45B6YMnTr4-xhgdTn7QDWJtKMv0SaIB4SpEcpCVONN0gUsW4jVtLIE9GYBfF5gEM7BgMP75DmTfLX1fZzcaz5SXVGk7_emXpb_3AfQOLbDYy-n3kPk8/s200/romaineseeds.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631172244292748882" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 0px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcAaqpDuIbIkM08SUSGUN2l1Oulgd626zYCjau6A-6KpxhDb5s0R1IVw60M3CY003DrAibehO46rriyJuQ3UfFjphk5Jua3cBUfKjFNQHPtaiUmJKgYsxn5QBgvZ_X9P70haVQqHXffo0/s200/romaineseedscloseup.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631172398413455730" />

And to test the germination of these seeds I took 14 of each seed (plus 2 romaine pods) and put them on a wet paper towl and tossed them in a zip bag. Twice every day the dogs, goats, chickens and cows need fed. The garden and nursery plants need watered and weeded. The kitchen and dishes need kept clean and the chicken eggs need collected and cleaned. The goats need grazed, lest they start plotting against you.

But in addition to chores several projects have also been getting done. I've been spending time each day gathering Dewberries. And with these gathered dewberries is made dewberry jam (or preserves) and after the preserves get made, you put it on toast!
<img style="display:block; margin:20px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSrzOnQJZ1SqoJPzTABdqVsq-Uz2t-DodFgy544RnE38WVehjag_d5yJqS6OoMmrtOJp2rI2n8948PWT7xB6f3aqplcc322at0JoArrqpR8nLwVkTx-956xruzduYuHuHNvKeyzFAU9jk/s400/dewberryjam.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608986200521125218" />
Dewberry jam tastes awesome, way better than that regular....grape jam. Plus it's pretty cool to pick the berries and have a way to preserve them for future eating (properly canned preserves are good for at least 365 days) The first batch produced about 8 jars and the bag is almost full again to make another 8 jars.

Another project that's been getting some attention is the milking parlor. We've been installing insulation, adding interior sheathing, caulking and painting. Cabinets have been moved in and need some restoration and the sink is awaiting some plumbing work (water line in, a drain for the sink and another drain on the floor) Once the milking parlor gets a few more touches we can start using it for goat milking. This will be much easier and cleaner than milking outside. Currently most of the milk goes to the kid goats but to keep the mom goats healthy extra is milked (which goes to the chickens)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBA8jxoWXkBfAUZbBa5hmvjRkA8oPS9Qpd4kn6AswMkPn08no38qFJgwCYo8TGFRoEy4jw_bKwc-T18pn4zZeNjLbfvyqijxtXyWzDejFePDEIG5eDY6dsLoUetTOGMFh6EUBP1sD6Imc/s200/milkparlor1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608990604290956066" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyf0hX8ICmGu2HkIUPvJf3bQyU_dN_O7iQ-J6CD9Rpof4_g6aNaFIonjX-eV9LqJ9NIP-Iqv1WXK5VQZ8owbjjgeOMH_xW4hBgPBxkEAs5z3ZGh29-Nk0DWCQxRQ6WKzPGM7GUAbShYOI/s200/milkparlor2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608990755429524754" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH9-aHviRRQi2bjx_kbOOsuhtOkRXG6U-AR3lBxoFH2D0xyLywSVJnkW4Z5-vN6bn98sYnQNVOO8pkePiFCrSvN4VviwacazRS5FqmES05-MHEcj0cVWs3MvzH_rbDd6T24iUgv2tiK9w/s200/milkparlor3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608991022927035218" />

In other news the goat herd has added 4 new goats to their ranks. Summer Squash is in the center foreground, followed by the Spinach and Beets plot. This past week I've been harvesting bagging and freezing Spinach (not to mention putting it on sandwiches) Beyond that plot you can catch a glimpse of Romaine (now starting to "bolt" meaning produce seeds) and in the background is the Carrots.
In the right foreground you can see some Tomato plants doing really well, followed by the Garlic plot. Next to the Garlic is a row of Cabbage and beyond the Garlic plot is the Onion plot. The Onions have recently started producing "seed heads." The seed heads get cut off so the plants put their production into the bulbs. Not pictured are the Bell Pepper and Asparagus plants which are doing great.
Ok that's about it, thanks for reading, check back soon for more posts!

Fastidious Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02825860172975287823noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2257675858010718259.post-65666701479296984562011-04-25T09:06:00.000-05:002011-04-25T19:55:16.301-05:00A week of workBeen keeping a journal to give you readers an idea of some of the projects and tasks required for Homesteading.
